Apple and Cinnamon Smoothie

The recipe

A Smoothie is made from fresh fruit or vegetables and the name comes from the smoothness of the texture when the ingredients are blended together. Smoothies were invented in the wake of the electric blender’s appearance in the United States and the word was first coined by Mabel Stegner on June 23, 1940 in an article on blending in the New York Herald Tribune. There are endless combinations for healthier options as well as treats. Spices work really well with the yoghurt and oatmeal in this recipe and cinnamon is a traditional flavour combination with apple.

Ingredients

  • 250ml low fat evaporated milk
  • 125ml apple juice
  • 125ml plain yoghurt
  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp oatmeal
  • 2 apples, cored and chopped
  • 1 tbsp runny honey
  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon plus a little for sprinkling
  • ⅛ tsp ground nutmeg

Method

Step 1

Put all of the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and sprinkle with a little ground cinnamon. They can be served straightaway, but if you leave it about 15-20 minutes the flavours will develop and it will taste even better.
